The Cleveland Browns are entering training camp with four quarterbacks, and the obvious odd man out is 2025 third round pick Dillon Gabriel.
Both Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders are looking to compete for the starting job, while the ultra-athletic Taylen Green enters the fold as the new man on campus after being selected in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft. There has been no buzz about Gabriel, but perhaps an opportunity for a fresh start has just opened up for him.
Kevin Stefanski, the new head coach of the Atlanta Falcons and former Browns head coach, hand-picked Gabriel a year ago. And now he enters training camp in Atlanta without either of his quarterbacks who are expected to compete for the starting job, Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr.
Could the Falcons look to the Browns to strike a deal for Gabriel and reunite him with Stefanski?
With both Tagovailoa and Penix sidelined to start training camp, Stefanski is in a similar situation to a year ago, when Kenny Pickett went down with an injury that sidelined him for the entirety of camp. The Falcons are currently giving undrafted free agent quarterback and Division II product Jack Strand all of their first-team reps at the start of camp, and have signed veteran Cooper Rush to add a body to the quarterback room.
The Browns currently have four quarterbacks in their room, and by all indications, only Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders are expected to be in their quarterback competition. This could be the fresh start and reunion with Stefanski that Gabriel needs.
And getting a pick back, from the Browns' perspective, from the fourth quarterback on their roster is a win-win for both teams.
