CORNING, N.Y. (WETM) – Corning boys basketball is getting set for a historic weekend.

Hot off of the heels of a thrilling overtime victory against William Floyd, Corning boys basketball is knocking on the door of the NYSPHSAA Class AAA Championship game. Last Sunday’s 72-64 triumph over the Colonials, propels the Hawks to their 1st state semifinals appearance as a combined program. In the semifinal round, Corning (21-1) will return to Binghamton’s Visions Veterans Memorial Arena to meet Section V’s Fairport (22-1), Friday at 1:30 p.m.

The quarterfinal game featured an impressive comeback by the Section IV Class AAA champs, who stormed past William Floyd, after trailing for the majority of the contest. Standout sophomore Nolyn Proudfoot continued an outstanding season, scoring a 40 point, 21 rebound double-double. In addition, Carter Proudfoot and Kyler Stevenson tacked on 11 point performances, including a trio of clutch shots in route to overtime.

“It was exciting, said Head Coach Mike Johnston Jr. You just have to take in the moment. I looked around several times during the game and saw the crowd going crazy, once we started to make the comeback. We just kept fighting in what we call ‘winning time.’ It was huge, it was exciting, and a huge moment for our program.”

Despite the major scoring night Nolyn Proudfoot, although sharing in the excitement of the win, credits the hard work and skill of his teammates for their sustained success.

“I have had some pretty good scoring performances, said Proudfoot. But, we’ve got guys like Kyler (Stevenson), knockdown shooter, Carter (Proudfoot), Teigen (Gill) can get it done, Kohl (Hogue) can too. I think he is the best point guard in the section. Anyone can get the job done, I know I need to score sometimes, but they can do the same thing.”

Once the 11th ranked Hawks hit the hardwood for Friday’s semifinal, scoring will be paramount, as they battle the 6th ranked team in the state. The Red Raiders reached the semifinal round with a 66-51 win over #16 Jamestown, touting a roster featuring standout seniors Alex Grejda and 6’5 NCAA D-I volleyball (USC) commit Noah Meabon.

“They have a very high IQ team, said Stevenson. We know they only have one loss and we are ready to work hard in practice every day. We’ve got to work on our defense and get stops and we’ll win.”

“We’ve got two really good teams, added Johnston Jr. They’re ranked 6th in the state and everyone ahead of them is a private school. We know that we are going to have to play really well and everyone that gets to this level is an elite team. We definitely have to do a better job on the glass and that has been a point of emphasis for us all year long, so we’ll continue to do that this week.”

Three hours before Corning’s showdown with Fairport, the 1st Class AA semifinal opens the day at the Binghamton Arena, featuring the only 2 teams to defeat the Class AAA semifinalists. At 10 a.m. #2 Seton Catholic (21-1) will meet #1 Penfield (22-1). The Saints defeated the Hawks 66-63, with a last second shot for the STAC Championship. The Patriots split the season series with the Red Raiders, handing them their only blemish in February 80-58.
