Cornerback depth remains Dallas' biggest question mark despite busy offseason overhaul originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Jerry Jones’ team didn't sit on its hands this offseason. But no matter how much roster-building the front office did, one unit still stands out as a major question mark on an otherwise improved roster: cornerback.
The offense needs no introduction. Dak Prescott is still throwing to CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, with Jake Ferguson underneath as a security blanket. Together, they give Dallas one of the most complete skill groups in the league.
Knowing the offense would carry itself, the front office spent the offseason retooling the defense from the ground up with new coaching voices, a full scheme overhaul, and serious investment in the position groups that got exposed a year ago.
They completely changed the look of their defense. Jalen Thompson signed the richest free-agent deal the franchise has handed out since 2012. Rashan Gary was brought in via trade to get after the quarterback.
Finally, Dallas traded up in the first round to land safety Caleb Downs, a player many scouts rated as the best overall defensive prospect in the draft. On paper, it's a defense that got a massive overhaul from top to bottom.
Still, ESPN's Mike Clay ranks their roster at number 14. He wrote, "Dallas doesn't have many major problem areas, so an unproven cornerback room is the biggest red flag. This area must be better after the Cowboys finished last in defensive EPA, allowed a 58.4 QBR (29th) and generated only six INTs in 2025."
DaRon Bland is the top corner when healthy, but injuries ruined his season last year. The depth behind him has no track record. Former Rams corners Cobie Durant and Derion Kendrick, second-year player Shavon Revel Jr., and fourth-round pick Devin Moore are all fighting for reps.
That is a lot of unproven players trying to hold down a tough position. Dallas fixed many things this offseason, but the corner room remains a major wildcard.
