After making a critically acclaimed debut with the low-budget independent drama Heavy, writer-director James Mangold took on this gritty crime drama, which was highly touted as Sylvester Stallone's long-awaited return to a serious dramatic role. With an illustrious cast of costars, including GoodFellas alumni Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, and Ray Liotta, Stallone plays Freddy Heflin, the ineffectual sheriff of a New Jersey suburb that a group of corrupt New York cops have turned into their own off-duty criminal empire. Deaf in one ear and desperate to prove his worth, the sheriff takes on the cops with standoffish assistance from an Internal Affairs cop (De Niro), resulting in an explosive climactic showdown. The stellar cast can't be beat, and Stallone is quite good as the overweight cop whose pride is on the line. Mangold's script is wildly uneven, but the film still packs a white-knuckled punch. --Jeff Shannon

First of all, you have to love a film where the principles all work for scale. Awesome cast; Stallone, Deniro, Keitel, Rappaport, Peter Berg, Ray Liotta, Annabella Sciorra, half the cast of Sopranos and Janeane Garofalo (filmed in the 30 minutes in the '90s when she was hot).

Copland is a really underrated flick (Ebert gave it **).

Stallone stated on the Opie and Anthony Show in 2008 that the film "hurt" his career, and that he had trouble getting roles for eight years, due to the film's failure and the mix of views on whether he was leaving action movies for more character-driven content. Stallone has described this as "the beginning of the end, for about eight years".

That just goes to show you how trends work. Did he deserve that? Absolutely not. I thought he was great in this movie--some of the best work he's ever done. But with the decline of the "80s action movie" and the lack of roles for an oversized behemoth who commands leading roles, it's no wonder there wasn't much out there. It's no surprise his last two major movies (Rambo and Rocky Balboa) were directed by him and he didn't have to audition for them.

Stallone was my favorite actor from '84 into the early 90's, so it was very weird to see him in this role. I remember reading that he ate something like 20 pancakes every morning to get fat for his character. I didn't realize it had all those soprano's actors, I'll have to revisit this one.

I'm a huge Stallone fan, and I loved this movie. I feel bad that he feels it did damage to his career. It's one of his best works, imo.

Recently re-watched it. I enjoyed it even more this time after having another 10 years of movies under my belt and a much better appreciation for good acting.

I'm in the same boat here (10+ years since viewing).

I'm surprised that I don't have it in my DVD/BluRay collection.

Damn. Saw the title and thought it was some biography I had missed on great American composer Aaron Copland.

riiiiiiiiiiiiight Sly. It was "the mix of views on who he was as an actor" that doomed him, not four horrific flops in 4 years with Daylight, The Sppecialist, Judge Dread and Assassins... followe dup by even bigger flops like Get Carter and Driven.

I love Sly more than anyone. I used to call myself Rocky and dress like him till I was like 8. But he's got no one to blame but himself for the way his career went.

I haven't seen it, but I think DeNiro's mustache might be responsible for any lack of success for any involved.

:)

NOTE: It appears that it is not Copland. It is Cop Land.

Hey, I liked that movie when I was a kid. Pretty awful though. :D

oh, it's one of the worst movies ever made... which is why I have it. Sly and Dolly... in a quasi-musical?!

It's funny you mention those 4 movies. They may have been flops but I own and have watched them several times. Daylight isn't that bad considering the genre (disaster flick) and Assassins is my all-time favorite Stallone movie and I'm still a Rocky fan(I think Assassins improves with each subsequent re-viewing). Judge Dread was weak but entertaining and the Specialist has decent nudity which helps offset the fact that it's 20 minutes too long.

I liked Cop Land but I already knew Stallone could act. Am I the only one here that saw and loved him in Oscar? And don't call me boss.
