Liam Cooper has signed a new one-year contract to play for Sheffield Wednesday in the forthcoming season.

Cooper joined Wednesday from CSKA Sofia on a short-term deal last November and played 14 games for them as they were relegated from the Championship.

But now the ex-Leeds United captain will return to Hillsborough as they rebuild in League One under new ownership.

"It's a new era for Sheffield Wednesday and one I'm absolutely delighted to be part of," he told the club's website.

"I can't tell you how delighted I am to be here – we can look forward now with the right people in the right roles – it's really exciting."

Cooper has played over 400 games in his career, including 19 times for Scotland and the 34-year-old ticks all the boxes for Wednesday who aim to bounce back after last season's troubled campaign.

"It was clear that Liam made a big impact in the dressing room last season," said the Owls' new sporting director Simon Wilson.

"He was a leader in difficult circumstances, providing guidance and mentorship to a young group, and he is the type of player who represents the culture we want to create."
