Conor McGregor’s return to the octagon lasted all of 69 seconds and it was a very not nice ending to UFC 329 on Saturday night. McGregor’s main event fight against Max Holloway was over as soon as he attempted to deliver a kick in his first battle since 2021. That attack caused a knee injury serious enough for the referee to immediately shut things down and and caused everyone watching to leave extremely disappointed.

There was immediate speculation that McGregor came into the fight injured, a notion UFC president Dana White quickly dismissed. In his first comments after the unfortunate incident, McGregor also assured fans that he was ready to go for his bout against Holloway.

“My head gasket is gone,” McGregor wrote on X. “Destroyed. I had no injury/injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.”

McGregor is a polarizing figure so there will be no shortage of fans who take twisted delight in him suffering through one of Dante’s hellish rings right now. That won’t make them any less disappointed with the product, though.

It’s an open question as to what comes next for one of UFC’s biggest stars of all time. The hyped returned was great for the bottom line in drumming up interest but will likely leave a sour taste in viewers’ mouths. Considering how long of a road McGregor had to travel just to appear in a match again, there’s no telling how long it will be until he tries another comeback. Throw what looks to be a significant injury into the mix and all bets are off.
