Ilia Topuria’s face was battered by Justin Gaethje almost beyond recognition when his corner called the fight after the fourth round and with one round to go at the White House on Sunday, June 14.

That didn’t sit well with Conor McGregor, the UFC legend.

“He quit himself,’’ McGregor wrote on his X account. “Sad to see. He earned a nice stripe however tainted, he will get stronger from this beating. What a sport!’’

UFC CEO Dana White said Topuria was taken directly to the hospital after the lightweight title bout at UFC Freedom 250 and speculated Topuria had suffered a broken orbital bone in his eye.

After the third round, the ringside physician examined Topuria and shook his head, indicating Topuria could not continue to fight. But Topuria appeared to urge the doctor that he wanted to continue, and the doctor relented.

Topuria suffered his first career loss after 17 consecutive victories.

The fight against Gaethje was a slugfest, but Topuria clearly absorbed more punishment. Both of his eyes were badly swollen and his bloodied face looked grotesque.
