Connor McDavid to Maple Leafs rumors heat up thanks to Darren Raddysh connections originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Toronto Maple Leafs' fanbase has long dreamed of landing Connor McDavid.
Those fans quickly got more excited about that possibility on Friday after the Leafs traded for defenseman Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Raddysh, a Toronto native, has some long-standing connections to McDavid.
Some fans seized upon a long-ago birthday post from Raddysh:

Others pointed out that Raddysh and McDavid had played together at multiple levels earlier in their careers:

The reality is that none of that means that the Maple Leafs' front office will pull off a McDavid deal. It's not like Raddysh just became their general manager.
But it's likely a narrative that will keep the Toronto fanbase thinking about McDavid going forward.
Right now, McDavid has two years remaining on his contract with the Edmonton Oilers. It seems unlikely the Oilers would deal him this summer, but if the 2026-27 season got off to a bad start maybe he could be involved in a deadline blockbuster. As far as a trade is concerned, next summer would probably be the most likely spot for McDavid to get dealt.
The Maple Leafs will surely put themselves in the picture, even if it's just in two years when McDavid reaches free agency.
Does Raddysh actually help them pull off a deal? Not really. But he would certainly welcome his new teammate with open arms if that ever actually happened.
