Before Connor Bedard, a hyped-up phenom No. 1 overall pick for the Chicago Blackhawks, there was Patrick Kane, a hyped-up phenom No. 1 overall pick for the Blackhawks. Now, ironically, the two might play together at different points in their respective career.
As Kane, the prolific winger who won three Stanley Cups in Chicago, considers his next options during his free agency, Bedard made an impassioned recruiting pitch to bring Kane back to the Blackhawks. A video released by the Blackhawks and apparently filmed right after Bedard signed a lucrative five-year, $75 million extension to stay in Chicago shows Bedard going all in on the idea of playing with a legend like Kane.
To Bedard, it seems apparent he believes an experienced and accomplished player like Kane can help lift the Blackhawks out of the doldrums of their current rebuild:
The most important tidbit about Bedard welcoming a Kane return to Chicago probably centers around the 21-year-old Bedard learning from the 37-year-old Kane. Even if Kane is a shell of the Hart Trophy-caliber player he was when he was younger, it's hard to argue he wouldn't likely be the best forward Bedard has played with so far in his young career:
If Bedard is interested in Kane coming back to the Blackhawks, it's safe to say there could be real momentum on this front in the coming days and weeks.
Per a recent Chris Chelios interview, Kane will decide between going back to the Blackhawks or playing for the ascending Buffalo Sabres, his hometown team.
Does Kane go back to the place where he became a hockey legend to play a mentor role to a young franchise player? Or does he try to help elevate his hometown team to its first Stanley Cup ever? I imagine we'll find out very soon.
