Since Stefon Diggs entered the NFL in 2015, he's worn three jersey numbers: No. 14, No. 1, and No. 8. When he took the field for the first time with the Washington Commanders on Friday, Diggs wore a No. 18 practice jersey.
Does this mean Diggs will be No. 18 for the entire 2026 season? No. Cuts happen and the roster will be trimmed to 53 players later this month. However, there's a problem, as each of Diggs' three former numbers are all worn by players who will make Washington's 53-man roster: RB Rachaad White (No. 1), QB Marcus Mariota (No. 8) and WR Antonio Williams (No. 14).
So, it's safe to go ahead and pre-order those Diggs' No. 18 jerseys. Right?
Not necessarily. Diggs may have his eyes on another legendary Washington number. The No. 7, which was worn by legendary former Washington quarterback Joe Theismann. On Friday, Diggs took to social media with a message for Washington fans.
"Yaw gotta help me... get the goat to bless me with that 7," Diggs wrote on Instagram with a picture of him wearing his new Commanders' jersey.
Here's the problem. Theismann's No. 7 isn't officially retired, but it's one of those jerseys that is assumed retired. Back in 2019, Washington used a first-round pick on quarterback Dwayne Haskins. He wanted the No. 7. Instead of telling Haskins no, then-owner Daniel Snyder told him to ask Theismann. What was Theismann supposed to say? So, of course, Haskins gave his blessing.
It will be interesting to see if the current regime, which is much more professional and treats the legends with respect, handles it differently. The problem with Snyder's old philosophy that you can't wear certain numbers because a legend wore them made no sense because those numbers weren't retired. Numbers such as 9, 21, 28, 44, 49, and 81 were off limits for years, but not retired. That's changed in recent years, with new owner Josh Harris officially retiring those numbers. The No. 7 wasn't worn from when Theismann broke his leg in Nov. 1985 to the 2019 NFL season. Haskins wore the No. 7 for two seasons, and it hasn't been worn since.
We'll see if Diggs gets his way or if he sticks with No. 18.
