Since coming over with Adam Peters last offseason, assistant general manager Lance Newmark has been a key player in the rebuilding of the Washington Commanders franchise.
He has plenty of experience in those matters as well.
Before his run with Washington, he helped turn around the Detroit Lions in their front office with strong draft classes that set the foundation for the organization. He's done the same thing with the Commanders.
Even with less draft capital than normal, Newmark and the Commanders were able to make do in the 2025 draft. Washington had just five picks this year but came away with quality players like Josh Conerly and Tre Amos.
"It may not be huge volume but really excited about what was available for us at each pick," Newmark said during Washington's end-of-draft press conference. "We felt like we could go into this with, 'Hey this guy is the best player' or 'He makes the most sense.' We're not tied to need. We're not tied to 'Oh we have to have this.' It's a great feeling going through three days with that mindset."
It was the 2024 class that set the foundation for Washington last year. Jayden Daniels has become a star at the quarterback position in just a single season. The fact that he got help from added draft picks only enhanced that.
Washington was able to strike again this year. They have built a roster to be sustainable throughout the course of a season, and may be in perfect situation to beat their previous run from last year.
