The Washington Commanders are doing pretty much everything they set out to do this offseason. Free agency has been a flurry of activity, and the retention of Laremy Tunsil was the team's top priority. Keeping him around to protect Jayden Daniels' blind side is only part of it; the other part is his ability to create holes for running backs. Speaking of running backs, the Commanders are bringing Jeremy McNichols back for the 2026 season.
McNichols is entering his ninth season in the NFL, making him the most senior running back on the roster. Obviously, Wild Bill is coming off his rookie campaign, and both Rachaad White and Jerome Ford are coming off their rookie contracts. McNichols has been an integral part of the Commanders' ground game for the past two seasons, including posting one of the top 10 runs of the season.
What McNichols brings to the Commanders is more than his on-field ability; this is also about being a mentor to younger players and helping them reach their own potential. On the field last season, McNichols carried the ball 44 times for 221 yards and a touchdown, plus caught 25 passes for 196 yards. He's a regular face on the special teams unit, where he sometimes returns kickoffs and is also excellent in pass protection.
The Commanders' running backs' room has the pieces it needs for the 2026 season, and it's shaping up to be a solid group of players.
