Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is the ultimate teammate. He's popular with every player on the roster, not just because he's the quarterback, but also because he makes the effort to get to know everyone.
Over the last two years, Daniels was close with veterans Bobby Wagner and Zach Ertz. Neither player is with the Commanders in 2026. Daniels is also close to his star receiver, Terry McLaurin. But no player is closer to Daniels than fellow quarterback Sam Hartman.
While Daniels was the No. 2 overall quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft, Washington made Hartman, who had a standout college career at Wake Forest and Notre Dame, a priority as an undrafted free agent. For the last two years, Hartman has served as the Commanders' practice squad quarterback. With no veteran behind No. 2 quarterback Marcus Mariota, Hartman is competing with rookie seventh-round pick Athan Kaliakmanis to be Washington's No. 3 QB in 2026.
In the battle for the No. 3 job, Hartman and Kaliakmanis have both had their moments. When it's all said and done, whoever doesn't win the No. 3 job could be ticketed for the practice squad.
Over the weekend, the NFL Network was in Ashburn for its "Training Camp LIVE" series, and Daniels joined Mike Garafolo and Brian Baldinger on the set after practice. The talk turned to Hartman, with Garafolo joking about Hartman's looks, prompting Daniels to say that Hartman was everyone's favorite player.
The NFL Network then showed a picture of Hartman, prompting Daniels to call Hartman "majestic."
Daniels and Garafolo were having some fun with the segment, while Baldinger just stuck to football.
The Commanders open the preseason on Friday against the Miami Dolphins, where Hartman should get plenty of snaps.
