The Washington Commanders made a new hire on Tuesday.
Commanders GM Adam Peters is still looking for ways to make the organization deeper. On Tuesday, the Commanders hired former Vikings assistant GM Demitrius Washington as a senior personnel executive, as first reported by Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports. Washington was hired by the team following the departure of Scott Fitterer, who left the franchise to join the sports agency, Athletes First.
Washington was signed to a contract by the Commanders following his serving four seasons in Minnesota. Peters and Washington are thus united, as they were former colleagues with the 49ers in San Francisco. While with the Vikings, Washington served as assistant general manager.
It so often is networking, and who you know in this world, and NFL management is actually not that much different. For Washington, he worked under now-former general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. After Washington served as the Vikings’ vice president of football operations from 2022-24, they promoted him to assistant GM last year. However, after the Vikings' disappointing 2025 season, the organization determined in January to move on from Adofo-Mensah. The Vikings hired new GM Nolan Teasley in early June and are reorganizing with personnel he wants to choose, so Washington was let go recently. Knowing and having worked with Peters previously, he quickly is provided an opportunity to bounce back.
Meanwhile, the Commanders had hired Fitterer in 2024 to join Peters’ first staff. Fitterer first worked in the NFL as a scout with the Giants in 1998. A native of Seattle, he joined the Seahawks as a scout in 2001 and received promotions over the next two decades. He was their director of college scouting when they won a Super Bowl, and Fitterer became vice president of football operations in 2020. He then served as general manager of the Carolina Panthers for three seasons, from 2021-23.
