The 2026 NFL Scouting Combine begins in just two days, and teams' delegations are already gathering in Indianapolis, Indiana, to prepare for the next several days of activity. Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters is among the delegation sent by the Commanders' organization, and he addressed the media at Tuesday's press conference.
One of Peters' topics of discussion was around the team's desire to retain veteran left tackle Laremy Tunsil.
J.P. Finlay of 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C., asked about the Commanders' plans for extending Tunsil's contract, and Peters said, "I don't want to put a timeline on it, JP, but it is really important for us. We've been having talks, and we've been having good, productive talks with Laremy and his team. We're as motivated as ever to get that done, but I don't want to put a timeline on it. Obviously, I don't think either side wants to drag it on, but I don't think the league year is going to be a deadline of any sorts."
The 31-year-old left tackle has one year left on his current contract with the Commanders, a contract that he largely negotiated himself while with the Houston Texans before his trade to Washington ahead of the 2025 season. Tunsil proved himself worthy of a contract extension this season, and the Commanders definitely don't want a repeat of the Terry McLaurin debacle.
The good news is that both sides have time, they are both motivated to get a deal done, and neither side wants to drag it on. The league year might not be a deadline for the deal to get done, but it will likely be done well before his current contract expires.
