Commanders' Antonio Williams named a 'best fit' draft pick

As the Washington Commanders gear up for rookie minicamp today, the sports media world is busy analyzing rosters and trying to gauge how well each team did during the offseason and the NFL draft. Adam Peters made several beneficial moves during free agency, and now it's time to look closer at the draft.

ESPN's Matt Bowen recently named 15 players who seem to be a perfect fit for the team that selected them. Commanders' Day 2, round 3 selection of Antonio Williams made the list.

Why he fits: Williams will fill a slot role for Washington under new coordinator David Blough. He has the coverage awareness to find soft spots, and he uses his strong vision to slither past defenders after the catch.

Williams, who caught 207 passes over four seasons at Clemson, can make himself available to the quarterback at a high rate. He should be viewed as a reliable target for Jayden Daniels when the Commanders need to move the sticks.

Williams isn't a big name like Carnell Tate or Brandon Aiyuk. He didn't get a ton of hype ahead of the draft, and some were surprised at Peters' third-round selection. However, Williams has a 74% catch rate throughout his time at Clemson, which is incredible. One of the big things about Tate was that he didn't drop a single pass in 2025. Guess what? Williams only dropped one.

Washington is excited about Williams. While many projected him as a slot receiver in the NFL, Peters also believes he can play outside. By the time the season starts, as long as Williams goes through the summer with minimal setbacks, he could be the exact player the Commanders need to line up alongside Terry McLaurin.
