The Crew were riding a two-game winning streak under interim coach Laurent Courtois before entering the eight-week World Cup break, and will be looking to continue that success in their return to action against New York City FC on July 22.
While the prolonged break gave Courtois five weeks of training to implement his system, the Crew lost a key piece in team-leading scorer Diego Rossi during the stretch. The 28-year-old, who recorded six goals through 15 games this season, was transferred to Liga MX's CF Monterrey on July 3.
The Crew added three international players since the MLS summer transfer window opened on July 13, including designated player Brais Mendez from La Liga's Real Sociedad, and signed midfielder Andres Herrera to a full-time contract after he spent two seasons on loan in Columbus from Argentina's River Plate.
However, none of those four players will be available for the New York City matchup as they are awaiting their visas.
"It's a tricky phase for us," Courtois said. "So, it's crucial for us that the guys who know the club and know me, try to get on the same page as much as we can."
The Crew are 1-1 against New York City this season, falling 3-0 on the road in regular-season action, and then defeating their Eastern Conference rival 1-0 to advance to the U.S. Open Cup semifinals during Courtois' first game.
