WESTFIELD — Colts principal owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon indicated that she’s open to a contract extension for Jonathan Taylor even though the team is headed into a critical season for the franchise’s future.
Taylor, the team’s best offensive weapon, has made it clear that he’d like to sign an extension in Indianapolis.
The three-time Pro Bowler has already said he wants to be a Colt for life, and while two other backs, Detroit’s Jahmyr Gibbs and Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson, are sitting out training-camp practices in the hopes of getting a new deal, Taylor is practicing.
The tone the Colts have set with Taylor this time around is the opposite of the contentious negotiation that led to Taylor’s three-year, $42 million extension in 2023. Taylor indicated earlier this week that the two sides have already been talking, and that he’s got faith in his agent, Malki Kawa, and the Colts to come together on a deal.
Irsay-Gordon reciprocated on Friday by praising a player who has rushed for 7,598 yards and scored 76 total touchdowns in six seasons with the Colts.
“I love Jonathan,” Irsay-Gordon said. “I’m really proud of the leader that he’s become on our team. He’s one of our pillars. His picture is on the stadium for a reason. I would love it if he’d be a Colt for life.”
Taylor is not the only player who can make the case for an extension.
Eight-time Pro Bowler Quenton Nelson is headed into the final year of his deal, another franchise pillar who has been a cornerstone for the Colts for a long time.
Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard, who is also headed into the final year of his contract and knows he needs to win to keep his job, indicated Tuesday that the franchise’s status as a team at a crossroads would not affect extension decisions for players like Taylor and Nelson.
“Just know this, we always are working towards trying to keep our own players here, and I think you know my thoughts on both of them,” Ballard said. “Quenton Nelson is a pillar, stands for all the right stuff, and Jonathan Taylor has been an excellent, excellent player for the Colts. Would love to have them long term. We'll see.”
Irsay-Gordon echoed those sentiments in a training-camp interview with local reporters on Friday.
“If it makes sense,” Irsay-Gordon said, “we would certainly do that.”
