The New England Patriots needed to upgrade the running back depth behind Rhamondre Stevenson, and they were able to do that in the 2025 NFL draft by selecting Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson in the second round with the 38th overall pick.

Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard had high praise for the rookie running back's pass protection skills when speaking to media members at a recent press conference.

Henderson was one of the most explosive running backs in the country last year, but he was also the best pass protector. NFL draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah even went as far as calling him was one of the best pass protectors he's ever evaluated.

And Ballard clearly agrees.

“Every running back coming into our league, the hardest thing for them is pass protection," said Ballard. "All of them have to learn. There's very few—like, I will say this. I thought Henderson at Ohio State might’ve been as good a pass protection back as I’ve seen come out of college. But most of them, they’re just not asked to do it at the level we are asking our guys to do it.”

Henderson will look to make an impact in a talented rookie class for the Patriots.

The explosive running back is known for his playmaking ability and breakaway speed, but his elite pass protection skills will likely score major points with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Pass-blocking was an issue for the Patriots in all aspects last season, and a running back with the ability to help on critical third-downs should go a long way in the offense improving.
