The Colts have activated second-year linebacker Jaylon Carlies off IR ahead of Sunday's road game in Jacksonville, the team announced Saturday, paving the way for linebacker to potentially make his 2025 season debut in a pivotal late-season divisional matchup.

Defensive end Tyquan Lewis has been downgraded to out. Kicker Blake Grupe and defensive tackle Chris Wormley have been elevated from the practice squad.

Carlies suffered an ankle injury that sidelined him in late-summer following the Colts' preseason opener against Baltimore, holding back a player who was expected to take over a starting role after the team let E.J. Speed leave in free agency. Carlies was placed on IR in late-August and initially wasn't expected to miss much more than the requisite four weeks, but the organization only opened his 21-day practice window on Nov. 19 ahead of the team's Week 12 clash with the Chiefs.

The team was required to activate Carlies by this weekend's game, or he would be sidelined for the rest of the season. He was a full participant in all nine practices or walk-throughs he's participated in since his 21-day window opened up.

In the wake of his injury, the Colts signed veteran linebacker Germaine Pratt in October following Pratt's release from the Raiders and Indianapolis cycling through a slew of replacement options at the weakside linebacker position. It's not immediately clear what role -- or how much of one -- Carlies will play in his return.

The injury-plagued fifth-round pick out of Missouri missed seven games as a rookie with a broken fibula before undergoing shoulder surgery in the offseason, forcing him to miss the entire spring installation of new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo's scheme.

The former safety has shown a particular strength in coverage when he's been on the field, following a college career as a safety before transitioning to linebacker as an NFL rookie a year ago. Carlies made 36 tackles and a sack in 242 defensive snaps a year ago.

Other Colts players' injury statuses ahead of Jacksonville game

Colts rotational defensive end Tyquan Lewis is out for Sunday's game with an ankle injury that landed him on the injury report starting with Wednesday's walk-through. Lewis was estimated to have not participated Wednesday, was limited in Thursday's practice and then missed Friday's.

Cornerback Sauce Gardner, who suffered a calf injury early in Sunday's game against the Texans, is the only Indianapolis player already listed as 'out' for Sunday's road game in Jacksonville, though Gardner did avoid landing on IR, opening the possibility for him to return sometime in the next couple weeks.

After a full week of full participation in practice, Colts quarterback Daniel Jones is active and again ready to play through his reportedly fractured fibula against the Jaguars.
