INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts decision to start Sauce Gardner at cornerback against Jacksonville may have come with consequences.

Gardner is questionable to return with a calf injury after starting and playing most of the first half. The veteran cornerback was spotted on the bench with a wrap on his leg.

Gardner, the biggest prize any team landed at the trade deadline, sat out three weeks after suffering a strain high in the calf muscle on the second play of the Colts’ loss to Houston.

At the time, Gardner and the Colts both said the injury did not threaten the Achilles tendon. Indianapolis also believed Gardner would be able to return at some point this season.

Gardner missed three games due to the calf strain, returned to the practice field this week and he had only one practice before returning to the starting lineup. Indianapolis put its No. 1 cornerback back into the starting lineup even though the Texans beat the Chargers on Sunday to knock the Colts out of the playoffs.

If Gardner’s injury is once again only to his calf, he likely would not face any limitations in returning for the 2026 season.
