The Indianapolis Colts have bolstered their defensive tackle depth in free agency.

The team is signing former Kansas City Chiefs' defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi, according to his agents at SportsTrust Advisors.

Why did the Colts sign Derrick Nnadi?

For starters, the Colts needed depth at defensive tackle. The only players under contract coming into free agency were DeForest Buckner, Grover Stewart, Colby Wooden, Adetomiwa Adebawore, and Tim Smith. An offseason defensive tackle roster needs quite a few more bodies.

But in addition to that, listed at 6-1, 317 pounds, Nnadi will provide the Colts with another run-first presence inside. Of course, Grover Stewart is leading the way in that regard, and the Colts just acquired Colby Wooden in a trade with the Packers, but Nnadi will bolster the depth and competition for those run-first snaps after Stewart.

While we don't know the contract details, this may end up being a deal around the veteran minimum that the Colts can move on from easily if needed.

Nnadi has spent his career lining up in the A or B gaps, helping against the run. He's not going to pile up quarterback pressures, but his ability to occupy space and take on blockers can help free up others around him.

Nnadi has spent the last eight seasons in Kansas City and has been a part of multiple Super Bowl teams. After playing over 500 snaps in all but one season from 2018-2023, Nnadi is averaging just shy of 300 snaps per season over the last two years.

Nnadi has appeared in 130 games, making 98 starts.
