It's a very important training camp and year ahead for Indianapolis Colts' cornerback JuJu Brents.
Through Brents' first two seasons, he's unfortunately had to navigate injuries. Out of 34 possible games, he's appeared in just 11 of them.
So the biggest thing for Brents right now, as training camp unfolds, and as Shane Steichen mentioned after Monday's practice, is staying healthy.
"Just coming back, staying healthy is his biggest thing, but he's been good so far," Steichen said. "Obviously learning a new defense, taking that in stride, so he's made some good plays out there and we need him to continue that."
In this new look defensive scheme under Lou Anarumo, we are going to see a more aggressive and disguise-heavy secondary that will often vary coverages. As Brents discussed earlier this offseason, he believes the new system fits his skill set well.
"One thing I will say is that defense is aggressive," Brents said during minicamp. "Not to put too much out there, but it just allows you to get out there and get in guys' face. That's what I do. I love to play man coverage, but also being able to switch it up. Give the offenses different looks.
"But I think for me, I think it is going to fit to my tools, my tool sets that I have. Just being able to get in guys' face, be aggressive, and hands-on."
We know that Charvarius Ward will be at one of the starting outside cornerback positions for the Colts, and Kenny Moore will be at the nickel. But the starting spot opposite of Wards is up for grabs this summer.
Competing for that playing time are Brents, Jaylon Jones, and Justin Walley. Ultimatley, Anarumo is looking for consistency.
"I think competition makes everyone better," added Steichen. "Obviously, those guys are fighting for that spot over there. There's a couple guys over there and they're battling like crazy."
