Phillip Rivers has just arrived, but he could be starting for the Indianapolis Colts as early as this week against the Seattle Seahawks.
Riley Leonard is working through a knee injury he suffered in the Colts' Week 14 game in Jacksonville. According to Ian Rapoport, Leonard has a Grade 1 PCL strain.
He will, however, practice in some capacity on Wednesday.
But whether or not Rivers starts this week is not dependent on Leonard's availability. As reported by ESPN's Stephen Holder, the Colts will evaluate Rivers throughout the week of practices and make the decision from there.
Rivers was signed to the Colts' practice squad. He has not played an NFL snap since the 2020 season.
However, having worked with Shane Steichen for several seasons when the two were with the Chargers, Rivers is quite familiar with the Colts' offensive scheme, which should allow him to hit the ground running in that regard.
Reports from Rivers' workout with the team also suggest that he threw the ball quite well.
But as SI's Albert Breer noted recently, Rivers' ability to throw the ball or know the offense was never really the question. Instead, the unknowns are around how he moves in the pocket, how quickly he can get into football shape, and how he takes a hit after being out of the game for five years.
Some of those answers won't be known until Rivers is on the field in a live game.

Asked about how they'll proceed this week, Steichen indicates that Rivers could start independent of Riley Leonard's status. Leonard WILL practice today on some level, Steichen said.
They'll be evaluating Rivers through the week and decide accordingly about Sunday.
