What a way to end the homestand.

The Colorado Rockies closed their stop at Coors Field with a comeback 6-2 win over the New York Mets, powered by another strong José Quintana home outing and a late Jake McCarthy grand slam. It was one of the club’s most satisfying wins of the season, and now the Rockies (15-23) head back on the road to open a three-game series in Philadelphia against a Phillies team (17-21) that has won eight of its last ten.

The Phillies are hot, but still under .500 in a year that was supposed to look more convincing. Colorado, meanwhile, is coming off a 4-2 road trip the last time it left Denver.

There is also this: the Rockies and Phillies enter the series with the same 4.67 team ERA. The Phillies miss more bats and have stronger underlying numbers, while the Rockies have been more contact-heavy and homer-prone. At Citizens Bank Park, that difference matters.

Tonight’s matchup is Chase Dollander against Jesús Luzardo.

Dollander enters 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 42 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings, but this will be just his second true start of the season. Colorado has mostly used him behind openers, including his last outing against Atlanta.

He has already seen Philadelphia once this year, working 4 1/3 innings of relief in April and allowing just one run on four hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Luzardo enters 3-3 with a 5.09 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 51 strikeouts in 40 2/3 innings, but the ERA does not tell the whole story. He allowed 24 earned runs over his first four starts, but has given up just three earned runs over his last three. The Rockies saw the good version in April, when Luzardo struck out 11 over 6 2/3 innings.

So the 5.09 ERA probably undersells how tough this matchup is.

The Phillies are not quite as scary from top to bottom as the names might suggest, but Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper have been elite. That alone is plenty dangerous at Citizens Bank Park.

Colorado is going right-handed heavy against Luzardo, hoping to make the strikeout lefty work a little harder.

So what wins out tonight: Colorado’s ability to draw walks and create traffic, or Luzardo’s swing-and-miss stuff? And can Dollander keep Philadelphia’s left-handed power in the park?
