A member of the University of Colorado football team died early during the morning of March 1.

Dominiq Ponder died in a single-vehicle crash on Baseline Road near Newland Court in Boulder County, according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 3 a.m. when Ponder’s vehicle was going westbound on Baseline Road and he lost control of the car on a right-hand curve, went across the eastbound lane and hit a guardrail, according to the release.

The vehicle went through the guardrail and then struck an electrical line poll and rolled down an embankment before catching fire, according to CSP.

"The preliminary investigation shows that speed is suspected as a factor," according to CSP's news release.

The 23-year-old Ponder was entering his third season as a quarterback for Colorado. He played in two games in the 2025 season. He previously spent time at both Bethune-Cookman and Georgia Tech.

"God, please comfort the entire Ponder family during this difficult time," CU football coach Deion Sanders said in a news release. "Dominiq was one of my favorites because of his passion, his heart and his willingness to go beyond what was asked. He will certainly be remembered, missed, and in our thoughts and prayers."
