College roundup: Kloft fuels St. Lawrence softball sweep of Union

Apr. 19—SCHENECTADY — Allison Kloft supplied six hits and five runs batted in during St. Lawrence University's softball doubleheader sweep of Union College on Friday in a Liberty League clash that stretched the Saints' winning streak to five games.

Kloft went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in St. Lawrence's 9-5 victory in the first game and was 3-for-5 with three RBIs in SLU's 8-0 victory in Game 2.

Maeve Thompson went 4-for-8 with four RBIs and a double for the doubleheader for the Saints (16-10, 4-4). Thompson and Stella VanGee each hit two-run singles in St. Lawrence's five-run top-of-the-seventh to erase a 4-4 tie.

Vivian Johnson was 4-for-5 with a double for the two games. Caelen Jahnle went 4-for-9 with an RBI.

Izzy Melanson pitched a complete-game shutout in the second game for the Saints. She allowed four hits to Union (5-15, 2-6) and struck out one. Sofia Berryhill picked up the win in relief in the first game, tossing two innings and allowing four hits and a run.

CLARKSON 6-2, ITHACA 4-13

The Golden Knights rallied from an early four-run deficit with the long ball to win Game 1 and record a Liberty League split against the Bombers in Ithaca.

Clarkson won the first game 6-4 and lost the second game 13-2 in five innings.

The Golden Knights fell behind in the first inning when the Bombers (18-4, 6-2) scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the inning. But Clarkson (17-11, 5-3) responded with four runs in the third as Devin Fitzpatrick and Emily Bulone each hit home runs and Zoey Kovach struck an RBI double. Lexi Rydelek then hit a home run in the fifth inning.

Fitzpatrick finished with two hits and two RBIs and pitched the win, going to 6-0.

In the second game, Haley Petrucci and Jessie Lopez each knocked in two runs and doubled. Mady Rowell pitched the victory, allowing six hits.

Rydelek hit another home run for the Golden Knights and Kovach went 2-for-3, doubled and drove in a run.

SUNY ONEONTA 9-7, SUNY POTSDAM 2-3

The Red Dragons broke open a one-run game with eight runs in the sixth inning to seal the first game and go on to a SUNYAC doubleheader sweep of the Bears in Oneonta.

Julia Serena hit a home run and knocked in four runs for Oneonta (12-12, 6-2) in the 9-2 first-game win. Ava Thys added two hits and two RBIs and Tatum Passonno also knocked in two runs with one hit. Tanner Smith pitched the win, allowing four hits and striking out four.

In Oneonta's 7-3 second game win, Emily Brown struck out seven and allowed four hits for the win. Thys supplied two hits and two RBIs and Passonno had two hits and an RBI.

Kaylee Dobransky doubled for SUNY Potsdam (7-18, 1-9).

BUFFALO STATE 9-16, SUNY CANTON 0-0

Gianna Core and Ella Susi each pitched five-inning shutouts and the Bengals battered the Kangaroos for 26 hits in a sweep of the SUNYAC doubleheader in Canton.

Core struck out seven batters and allowed two hits, and Susi struck out seven and gave up four hits against SUNY Canton (0-19, 0-8).

Sarah Congelosi hit a pinch-hit home run in the first game and blasted a home run, double and single in the second game for Buffalo State (15-11, 9-1). Gigi Martinez went 4-for-5 overall with two doubles, a triple and four RBIs.

Ella Stewart went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in the first game and Ashley Jedrich was 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the second game. Natalie Burck went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the second game.

BASEBALL

CLARKSON 9-11, RIT 7-13

Joe Figliolino hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to put the Golden Knights ahead for a good as Clarkson rallied to win the opener and split a Liberty League doubleheader against Rochester Institute of Technology in Potsdam.

The Golden Knights, who trailed 5-0 in the first game, won 9-7 before dropping the second game 13-11.

Figliolino finished 3-for-5 and added a double. David Harris was 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI for Clarkson. Seth Albert went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Cam Jerrett was 2-for-3.

In the second game, Caelen Kim went 3-for-7 with three RBIs and Jarin Moses hit a grand slam to highlight the Tigers' victory in a wild second game. Jackson Rusiecki added a double and two RBIs for RIT (20-10, 9-6).

Beau Vardoin went 4-for-5 for Clarkson (13-11, 5-6) with a double and an RBI. Jerrett and Harris each supplied two hits and two RBIs.

HOBART 7, ST. LAWRENCE 2

Teck Nash pitched a nine-inning five-hitter, striking out four as the Statesmen defeated the Saints in a Liberty League game in Canton.

Sean Garvin and Connor O'Neil each supplied two hits and an RBI for Hobart (16-10, 6-7). Jack Byrnes also had a hit and an RBI.

Brett Federico led St. Lawrence (8-18, 4-7) with a single, double and RBI.

SUNY CORTLAND 16-14, SUNY CANTON 4-0

Luke Schatner recorded nine of his 10 RBIs in the first game, hitting a home run in each game as the Red Dragons rocked the Kangaroos (6-17, 3-9) in a SUNYAC doubleheader sweep in Canton.

Schatner also doubled three times as Cortland (19-10, 9-3) won the first game 16-4 and the second game 14-0.

Nolan Smith hit two triples for Cortland in the first game and Danny Jackson homered and knocked in three runs in the second game. Zachary Kringdon added a home run and two RBIs in Game 2.

Luis Misla struck out 10 batters in five innings for the win in the first game, Matthew Nochowitz allowed five hits in five innings, combining with Tommy Lynch on the shutout.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

ST. LAWRENCE 10, SKIDMORE 5

A dominant third quarter and a career-best eight points from sophomore Jessica LaPlaca helped the Saints defeat the Thoroughbreds to win a Liberty League game in Canton.

LaPlaca generated three goals and five assists, while Caroline Hamilton, Ellie Camp and Cate Rathnam each supplied a pair of goals for St. Lawrence (6-7, 4-3) and Neve Ley contributed a goal.

On defense, Brigette Gable led the way for the Saints with three caused turnovers and picked up six ground balls, both team highs.

After building a 6-3 advantage through the first half, St. Lawrence outscored Skidmore, 3-0, in the third quarter to pull away.

Goalie Zoe Froimovitz made six saves on the day for the Saints and Isabella Iannone totaled 11 saves for Skidmore (6-8, 3-5).

Lily Schwartzman tallied a pair of goals to lead the Thoroughbreds offensively.

SUNY POTSDAM 25, SUNY MORRISVILLE 10

Graduate student midfielder and Massena graduate Lindsey LaDue recorded a career-high 10 points on eight goals and two assists as the Bears cruised to victory against the Mustangs to prevail in a SUNYAC game in Morrisville.

Tessa Pierce recorded a personal best six points on three goals and three assists for SUNY Potsdam (6-8, 1-7) and Jayla Thompson supplied five goals and an assist.

Megan MacWilliams registered three goals and Malloy Marks totaled two goals and an assist for the Bears.

Freshman goalie Kimora Swamp made 11 saves for SUNY Potsdam and junior goalie Jane Olszewski allowed two goals and made two saves in the fourth quarter.

With her big day, LaDue has now totaled 75 points, including 48 goals and 27 assists on the season and 197 (145- 52) for her career. She needs just one point to tie Anita Reitano's 2022 single-season record. LaDue is also fourth on the all-time scoring list and needs just two goals to top Hall of Famer Carly Richards' program goals record. She ranks fifth in all-time assists.

Anyssia Ingersoll generated seven goals and two assists to lead SUNY Morrisville (0-10, 0-8) on the day.

SUNY CANTON 15, SUNY PLATTSBURGH 6

Ava Dupee and Maddy Caron combined for eight goals and five assists to pace the Kangaroos past the Cardinals to win a SUNYAC game on their senior day in Canton.

Dupee led SUNY Canton (7-8, 3-5) with three goals and four assists on a season-best seven points. Caron finished with five goals, an assist, a game-high seven draw controls and four caused turnovers, while Lindsey Wunder added two goals, one assist and six draws.

Olivia McCormick tallied two goals and an assist for the Kangaroos, Caroline Nappi scored twice and Sydney Dunn added the other goal.

Goalie Olivia Scott totaled 10 saves and game-highs of eight ground balls and five caused turnovers in the win.

Rachel LaMar led SUNY Plattsburgh (3-11, 1-7) with two goals, Ashley O'Hara tallied two assists and Mae Olshansky made 11 saves in the loss.

UNION 10, CLARKSON 7

Greta Maurer supplied three goals and Maddie Doyle scored a pair of goals to spark the Garnet Chargers past the Golden Knights to prevail in a Liberty League game in Potsdam.

Gillian Joseph contributed a goal and two assists for Union (9-3, 5-3) and Maddie Dineen tallied a goal and an assist.

Goalie Sydney Widlitz made four saves in the win for the Garnet Chargers.

Madelynn Barnum scored four goals and assisted on another to lead Clarkson (8-6, 2-5) and goalie Riley Donovan finished with nine saves.

Gabby Cranfield chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Golden Knights.
