After the NCAA passed a landmark "five years to play five seasons" eligibility policy earlier this week, it's now examining major changes to college football's offseason format.
The Division I Football Oversight Committee has proposed a pair of new rules that would impact the offseason schedule, according to ESPN's Adam Rittenberg. First, the committee has proposed a change that would allow for a total of 21 offseason practices, split across two out-of-season practice windows.
Previously, teams were permitted to hold 15 practices during the spring, but the new model would likely create an offseason schedule more in line with the NFL, which holds organized team activities in the late spring and early summer.
As part of the change, fall preseason practices would be reduced from 25 to 21 over 27 days. The committee cited more practice opportunities earlier in the offseason as a reason for reducing the number of fall camp practices.
Another proposal by the committee would shorten the transfer portal window from 15 days to 10. If passed, the transfer portal window would open on the first business day after Jan. 1.
The proposal will be voted on in August. If approved, it would go into effect for the 2027 season.
