Shortly after the New York Giants selected Penn State product Abdul Carter with the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, the discussion quickly ensued about what number he would wear.

Carter mentioned the possibility of wearing No. 56 which was quickly shot down by Lawrence Taylor.

Carter then shifted to the No. 11 he wore at Penn State and although Phil Simms seemed open to the idea to give Carter his blessing, he was overruled by his family members.

FOX Sports radio host Colin Cowherd was critical of the Giants' rookie for making those requests to wear the jersey numbers of Giants legends before stepping on the field for his first NFL snap.

"In life, all you young players, row your own boat. Make your own legacy," Cowherd said on The Herd Monday. "How about you learn how to carry a veteran's bag before you take his jersey? This screams of entitlement. It screams for lack of self-awareness. Those jerseys are retired. And it's not like it's a tight end -- Lawrence Taylor is the greatest New York Giant. Just asking is a lack of self-awareness."

For what it's worth, Hall of Famer Warren Moon gave his permission for the Tennessee Titans to unretire his No. 1, allowing 2025 first-overall pick Cam Ward to wear it. Additionally, last offseason, rookie Malik Nabers got permission from the family of Ray Flaherty to bring No. 1 out of retirement in favor of Nabers wearing the number.

Although it may seem to show a lack of awareness for Carter to ask for permission to wear the jersey numbers that have been retired by such iconic legends of the franchise, this does seem to be a trend that will be more common as the years go along.

While fans anxiously wait for Carter to pick a number, it appears he will have to pick a number that isn't retired to create his own legacy.
