The San Francisco 49ers are drawing criticism for their handling of star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. This time it comes in the form of a big-name sports host, Colin Cowherd.

The Fox Sports analyst is known for his unique takes on his show, "The Herd with Colin Cowherd." Not every take is popular, but that does not make his show any less entertaining. What is interesting is Cowherd is criticizing the Niners as well as Aiyuk.

Here's what Cowherd said on the Niners' approach and how it lands in the big picture on his show, "The Herd with Colin Cowherd."

"I've been saying this on the Niners for years—cut bait, move on. The Rams do a much better job at moving on from injured players or players with drama. The Niners either coddle or keep them in-house. That's why the 49ers' roster has become old, dramatic, brittle, and expensive. Brandon Aiyuk goes on Instagram and basically blows up any opportunity to play for a tremendous young quarterback, Jayden Daniels. The Commanders dodged a bullet here. That stuff is just bad, and I wish the Niners would have moved on years ago."

Cowherd's criticism does not appear to be that the Niners need to let Aiyuk go for his sake. The petulant behavior that got Aiyuk to this point is what Cowherd suggests makes him undesirable for other teams, too. He notes that in not signing or trading for Aiyuk, "the Commanders dodged a bullet."

It appears that Cowherd is coming from the vantage point of protecting team unity and moving on from a player that does not want to be there.

Aiyuk is technically a distraction in the sense that he's the top 49ers story of the last three months and maybe longer. Players do still get asked about the former Niners starter. Even so, the idea that Aiyuk is a true locker room distraction might be making his comments a bigger deal than they actually are.

The former 49ers star is a spectacle. His saga has been worth discussing with new angles popping up by the day. Still, it's unlikely that his absence will have any affect on the 49ers next year. After all, they won 12 games last year without him, and without their starting quarterback for half the season for that matter.

The additions of Mike Evans, Christian Kirk and De'Zhaun Stribling effectively nullify most if not all of what the team lost in Aiyuk over the last couple of years. We'll see if the team decides to release him from his contract in the next few months.
