Mar. 17—GRAND FORKS — Cole Reschny made national headlines in Canada last May when he became the first elite prospect to publicly announce he was leaving Canadian major juniors for college hockey.
The Calgary first-round draft pick from Macklin, Sask., lived up to his top billing.
Reschny, who is tied as UND's leading scorer heading into the NCAA tournament, was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference's Rookie of the Year on Tuesday.
He joins an impressive list of winners.
Once Sacha Boisvert makes his expected NHL debut this month, then 11 of the 12 previous winners will have played in the NHL.
That includes UND's winners: Brock Boeser, Shane Pinto, Jackson Blake and Boisvert.
Reschny has five goals, 29 assists and 34 points in 33 games.
In the last 25 years, only 11 UND rookies have tallied that many points and it's an impressive list — Blake, Tyson Jost, Boeser, Danny Kristo, T.J. Oshie, Jonathan Toews, Ryan Duncan, Travis Zajac, Rastislav Spirko, Brady Murray and Zach Parise.
Only two UND rookies have tallied as many assists as Reschny since The Ralph opened in 2001 — Boeser and Parise.
In NCHC play, Reschny finished with 23 points in 22 games, leading all freshmen.
"There's a lot to like," UND coach Dane Jackson said. "I think the first thing I think of when you say his name is his presence. His game is so mature and strong, a 200-foot game. But I think as a person, he's such a dialed-in, focused guy. It's been fun to see him, as the season has gone along, he has kind of gotten a little more loose and enjoyed his teammates and having fun at the rink. But he's definitely a consummate professional, how he takes care of business on and off the ice."
UND's rookie of the year winners in the old Western Collegiate Hockey Association were Kristo, Murray, Brandon Bochenski, Karl Goehring, Landon Wilson, James Patrick, Kevin Maxwell and Alan Hangsleben. Bob Munro won Sophomore of the Year in 1967, when freshmen were ineligible to play.
Reschny has centered one of UND's top two lines all season.
He's been effective in all areas of the game — not just point totals. Reschny has a plus-11 rating and is winning 55% of his faceoffs.
Jackson said some of Reschny's qualities remind him of other former UND standouts.
"He's got a bit of Jason Gregoire for me," Jackson said, "a really, really good two-way player. He's got a little Jonny Toews focus and seriousness to how he approaches things, which is obviously an outstanding quality."
Reschny has been excellent as the season has drawn to a close. He will enter the NCAA tournament on an eight-game point streak, his longest of the season.
UND will find out its NCAA tournament assignment at 2 p.m. Sunday during a selection show on ESPNU.
