The war of words between Texas and Texas Tech continues, and this time, it was Cody Campbell taking a shot below the belt.
The billionaire booster for the school in Lubbock appeared on the Pat McAfee Show on Friday to talk about the prospect of the Red Raiders playing the Longhorns at the beginning of the 2026 season. He, of course, had some pointed words for the school in Austin and its head football coach, Steve Sarkisian.
"I don't know if you know the difference between a bull and a steer...but Bevo [Texas' mascot] is a steer. It's become very clear that there are quite a few steers down in Austin, and not very many bulls," Campbell said. "When Sark picked a fight with a bunch of West Texas boys, he should've know to pack a lunch. Because we're ready to spot the ball, we're ready to go."
All of this started when Sarkisian took a subtle swipe at Texas Tech's strength of schedule for this year, and Texas Tech didn't back down. Red Raiders head coach Joey McGuire responded by saying, "We would love to play Texas," and told The Athletic's Chris Vannini that Tech was working to buy out Week 1 games against Abilene Christian (Tech's opponent) and Texas State (Texas' opponent) so the two teams could meet. McGuire also said that if the game wasn't played in Lubbock, it would be at AT&T Stadium.
Texas and Texas Tech have not met since 2023, right before the Longhorns left the Big 12 for the SEC. That game did not go well for Tech, resulting in an embarrassing 57-7 defeat in Austin. But times have certainly changed in college football, and Campbell, maybe the most outspoken figure in the sport, just turned up the temperature significantly on his in-state rival.
Will the Longhorns and Red Red Raiders actually play this season? Both sides will have to put their money where their mouths are to make it happen.
