A massive blackout brought unexpected drama to the Madrid Open on Saturday, as a nationwide power outage swept across nearly all of Spain and Portugal. Among the players affected was Coco Gauff, who had just wrapped up her match when the power went out.
Gauff, caught in the eerie aftermath, shared a chilling glimpse of the moment on her Instagram stories. Filming from her darkened and deserted locker room, the American star captured an almost cinematic scene — an empty, shadowy space that looked straight out of a thriller. She explained she was just about to take a shower when the blackout hit, leaving her in unexpected darkness.
“There’s literally no power, I’m literally in the locker room right now, I’m about to take a shower, there’s just one tiny emergency light right here, but I’m about to take a shower. I'll let you all know how it goes,” says Coco Gauff on her Instagram stories.
Despite the initial ominous vibes, Gauff later lightened the mood with an update. She posted another story showing a much cozier setting: a candle-lit evening, where she found a creative way to make the best of the situation. It seems Gauff embraced the blackout with her trademark positivity, turning a potentially unsettling experience into a memorable moment.
The blackout caused widespread disruption at the Madrid Open, suspending matches, disabling electronic line-calling systems, and plunging even fan areas into darkness.
