In an All-American battle between the two highest remaining women's seeds, Coco Gauff outlasted Jessica Pegula to advance to the Wimbledon semifinals.
The former doubles partners battled through three tough sets on Centre Court, with the fourth-seeded Pegula taking the first before Gauff rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory.
It was a familiar script for Gauff, 22, who won her fourth three-set match in a row at the All England Club. In fact, Gauff entered the match with a 77% winning percentage in Grand Slam three-set matches. That's the third-best mark among women in the Open era.
Already a two-time major champion, Gauff has reached the semifinals at Wimbledon for the first time in her career.
"Pretty insane honestly considering I hadn't won a match on grass in two years before this tournament," Gauff said in her post-match interview.
"I'm definitely happy with how I played today."
Coco Gauff has another service break in her column. And this one could be the key to winning the match.
Tied 1-1 in the final set, Gauff broke Jessica Pegula at 15 to take the upper hand.
Now, can she serve out the match and advance to the semifinal?
Coco Gauff could be staging another of her patented late rallies.
After dropping the first set, Gauff overpowered Jessica Pegula in the second set, breaking Pegula twice and holding her own serve every time to prevail 6-3 and pull even in the match.
That will set up a deciding third set and what could be a thrilling finish.
The first-game break holds up and Pegula takes the early lead by winning the opening set 6-4.
Pegula put pressure on Gauff's forehand throughout and Gauff made 16 unforced errors to tilt the match in her favor.
However, Gauff has a history of rallying from opening deficits to win, so this match is still very much up in the air. She has 17 major match wins after losing the first set.
Under muggy afternoon conditions, the highest remaining women's seed at Wimbledon gets off to a hot start.
