Club América was able to pull out the win against Querétaro on the road after a streak of bad results. While the Aguilas took home all three points it wasn’t a dominant performance and the Gallos were close to tying the game on multiple occasions. Now América will have a few days to rest before the Concacaf Champions Cup while the Gallos won’t hit the field until next week against Tigres.
André Jardine opted for some changes in the lineup for this game. The most notable change was in goal as Luis Angel Malagon was benched for Rodolfo Cota. This change was understandable considering Malagon’s level has dropped drastically over the last year. While this swap can also be attributed to the CCC games, the reality is that Malagon has not been as reliable in net as he used to be.

América started this game with a lot of intensity as they kept the pressure high on the home side to begin the game. They didn’t get their first real big chance at goal until the 12th minute when they were awarded a free kick outside the box. Brian Rodriguez was the chosen one to take the kick but his ball into the box was defended out. Two minutes later they had another chance when Rodriguez was fouled outside the box and just like the first chance, the ball was cleared out. Rodriguez finally had his golden opportunity in the 21st minute when he opened the score in the Corregidora. On a counter attack, Rodriguez took the ball up the left side where he made his way into the box. He took out the defender and the goalkeeper and did not hesitate to kick the ball into an open net to put his team ahead.
A few minutes later the visitors attempted to double their lead on a corner but the Gallos easily defended the ball out of danger. The home side was close to drawing the game a few minutes later when they received a corner as Mateo Coronel headed the ball towards the net but it went just above the crossbar. The Gallos had a few more chances to equalize but the América defense was there to put a stop to all of them. The home side finally had their chance in stoppage time. Coronel once again got his head on the end of the ball that hit the crossbar but it went out and Ali Avila kicked in the rebound. Upon replay, it showed that Coronel’s ball crossed the line and then bounced out where Avila hit it in. Regardless of who ended up on the score sheet, this goal leveled the game right before the half.
The second half started with the same 22 players on the field as both coaches trusted their players to get the job done in the second half. Brian Rodriguez attempted to take the lead for his team in the 50th minute but Guillermo Allison easily collected the ball. A few minutes later it was Erick Sanchez’s turn to go for a goal but Allison also stopped this shot. Three minutes later Querétaro was close to scoring on a corner but Cota punched the ball out before a blue jersey got their heads on it. In the 62nd minute América was finally able to capitalize on their chance thanks to Patricio Salas. Brian Rodriguez made his way up the left side of the field where he sent the ball into the box. Salas found himself in the center where he was surrounded by a few blue jerseys. Still, he kicked the ball towards the net where it hit a defender and he got his own rebound and this time it went into the back of the net to take back the lead for the visitors.

A minute later the Gallos attempted to level the game again on a corner but Cota made a big jump to get the ball away from any blue jersey. As the game neared the end the home side did not slow down as they looked for a goal to equalize the game. The problem was that they weren’t able to finish any of their chances. The wingers on both sides sent in many crosses into the box but there weren’t any blue jerseys in the box and the Aguilas easily cleared any balls in the area. The Gallos had so many opportunities to level the game but they just could not capitalize on any of them and the game ended on a sour note for the home side.
While it wasn’t the prettiest of games, América was still able to pull out a win. Now they will regroup as they will continue their journey in the Concacaf Champions Cup against the Philadelphia Union meanwhile Querétaro will have their hands full with Tigres next Friday.
