Former Clemson Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik did not have the final collegiate campaign that he initially planned, trudging through a middling year and watching his NFL Draft stock plunge as a result.
Once viewed as a potential top-five pick, Klubnik plummeted to the fourth round, landing with the New York Jets.
The good news? Klubnik stands a great chance of earning some playing time during his rookie season, as Geno Smith isn't exactly an inspiring option for the Jets. The bad news? Klubnik's results in training camp have been mixed.
The uncertainty surrounding Klubnik has resulted in some of the New York media questioning the Jets' quarterback setup, with ESPN New York's Jake Asman going as far to say that Gang Green might want to trade for Andy Dalton to solve the problem.
“I like Cade Klubnik, why not give him a chance, but I think at some point, if you’re the Jets, if you’re Aaron Glenn trying to save your job, wouldn’t you want Andy Dalton as the backup? It’ll cost you a seventh-round pick to get him from the Eagles,” Asman said.

Asman feels that Klubnik should start the 2026 campaign as the Jets' third-string quarterback, and then potentially ascend to the primary backup a bit later.
“Klubnik can eventually be QB2. If the Jets fall out of it, you play him down the stretch over Geno or Dalton," Asman added. "... If you’re the Jets, if you’re Aaron Glenn, and God forbid something happens to Geno Smith early on in the season, is Cade Klubnik as a fourth-round rookie going to come in and save your job?”
The problem for the Jets is they need to know if Klubnik can represent a long-term answer for them as soon as possible.
Why? Because New York boasts three first-round picks in next year's draft, which is slated to be absolutely loaded with elite quarterback talent.
Of course, we initially heard the same thing about the 2026 draft class going into last year, and look how that turned out. But the Jets would surely still like to know what they have in Klubnik before making any rash decisions.
Clemson fans know how good Klubnik can be when he is locked in. He racked up 36 touchdown passes in 2024, putting himself on the map as a top NFL prospect. He is also very athletic and has obvious dual-threat capabilities.
But can the 22-year-old be consistent on the professional level? It remains to be seen. The Jets need to give him the opportunity first, though.
