Clemson freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds kept showing up this spring, and eventually it was too obvious to overlook.

What started as a crowded race behind the starter didn’t stay that way for long. Reynolds separated himself with steady play in practice, then carried that into the Tigers’ spring game where he handled the backup role and looked comfortable doing it.

The freshman finished 7-of-10 passing and added a rushing touchdown, but more importantly, he looked like he belonged. He made quick decisions, moved well, and didn’t look overwhelmed, something that stood out to the coaching staff.

Dabo Swinney didn’t hesitate when asked if Reynolds had put himself in position to compete.

“Absolutely, absolutely,” Swinney said after the spring game. “Ain’t nobody got lifetime contracts around here. Everybody has to prove it. Everybody has to show up. Everybody has to earn it.”

That push isn’t coming from anyone else slipping. It’s coming from how consistent Reynolds has been since the start of spring.

“CV did not do anything to back up, he has not done anything to back up,” Swinney added. “But Tait has done everything to move forward.”

Reynolds worked his way through a group that was competing for that second spot and came out on top.

“There was a bunch of guys kind of battling for that second spot, and he cleared that. He came out of that smoke first, with that group,” Swinney said. “Now, he’s got a big summer ahead and he is just going to keep getting better.”

For a player that wasn’t expected to factor in right away, Reynolds made himself part of the conversation. Now it’s about what he does next, but the way he handled the spring, and the spring game —

has already changed how he’s viewed inside the program.
