McFarland Dedicates Top-Five at The Rock to BiffleJames Gilbert - Getty Images
In NASCAR's return to The Rock, YouTube star and aspiring stock car racer Cleetus McFarland recorded a top-five in the ARCA East feature Saturday afternoon. McFarland, legal name Garrett Mitchell, is entered in all three Rockingham Speedway races this weekend: Trucks on Friday night, ARCA East on Saturday, and his maiden O'Reily's race.
McFarland is running with Rette Jones Racing in their flagship No. 30 Ford Mustang for the second race of the season, finishing ninth at Daytona this February. McFarland backed up his top-ten at Daytona with a top-five at Rockingham, finishing fourth behind Tristan McKee, Carson Brown, and Isaac Kitzmiller.
When McFarland got out of his Ford Mustang, he was asked by FloRacing what brought him success in his sixth-ever ARCA start.
"Honestly, I just went out there and turned left for Greg Biffle," McFarland said. "I had more confidence today than I've ever had in a stock car. Even though I got the world against me, I got all these people here rooting for me. I was feeling good; the Kenetix Rette Jones Racing No. 30 was turning so good. I mean, I had the leaders in my sights the whole time. I was a little off-pace, but like top-four, I can't believe it. I'm fired up and feel good!"
McFarland and the racing community lost Biffle a week before Christmas last year when the former NASCAR driver, his family, and some friends were killed in a private plane crash. Biffle was on his way to visit McFarland, and the racer was among the first to confirm publicly that Biffle was likely on the plane before the official manifests were released.
The duo was also featured in national news when they flew supplies and conducted rescue missions for those impacted by the devastating floods caused by Hurricane Helene across Western North and South Carolina.
When asked what he believed his friend would think if he saw his fourth-place finish, McFarland answered, "I think he'd be happy I didn't do anything stupid. Biff didn't teach me dumb stuff, so I didn't do any dumb stuff today. I tried to use everything he's ever taught me."
