Butler tops Chargers draft board

04.26.03 - The Chargers may have traded their top pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, but the first person listed on their board is somebody who isn’t eligible in the draft.
Prior to the draft, newly-promoted General Manager A.J. Smith revealed a card with his predecessor John Butler’s name on it identical to the cards used for each draft-eligible player. The card includes Butler’s name, height, weight, etc., just like every other player on the Chargers’ draft board.
Smith placed the card at the top spot under the Chargers’ helmet on the board where each of the team’s picks will ultimately be listed.
The card is a symbolic reminder that Butler will be in the draft room in spirit.
Likewise, the Chargers are in the process of creating a patch with the initials “JB” to be worn on the left chest shoulder of their uniforms for every game in 2003. The team has alerted the NFL and is seeking league approval.
