Tennessee has its second entry into the transfer portal this morning, as freshman Clarence Massamba told VolQuest his intentions. Massamba spent just one year in the program after joining Tennessee late last recruiting cycle.
The 6-5 guard appeared in 12 games for Tennessee this season, logging 39 total minutes. He scored four points on the season, buried on the depth chart out of the rotation. Massamba came over from France as a 3-star prospect. He spent time playing on AS Monaco’s U21 team in France, averaging just under ten points per game before arriving in Knoxville.
“He is a long, athletic, versatile guard who can really attack in the open court,” Rick Barnes said a year ago after signing Massamba. “He is good with the ball in his hands, yet also possesses the ability to excel without it. Clarence has a nice feel for the game and an excellent basketball IQ. He is a hard-working, driven young man who plays with a chip on his shoulder and our fans will love seeing the way he competes.”
Massamba joins Cade Phillips in the transfer portal, making two Volunteers so far. In today’s climate, there are sure to be more.
Tennessee has clear needs to replace Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Felix Okpara. Nate Ament is expected to turn pro, which will create another opening in the starting five. The Volunteers have already picked up a commitment from Belmont shooting guard Tyler Lundblade, starting to fill an immediate need for outside shooting.
The transfer portal officially opens tomorrow.
