If you’re a believer in Baseball Reference, there have been only three pitchers in baseball this season who’ve been better than New York Yankees starter Cam Schlitter. One of them, by the slightest of margins (3.9 bWAR to 3.8), is Cincinnati Reds righty Chase Burns.
So, if you’ve watched Chase Burns completely dominate opponents as a Reds fan all season, prepare yourself to see what Schlitter does to the Cincinnati offense on Friday night at Yankee Stadium as the Reds begin a weekend series on the road in the Bronx.
Schlitter starts opposite Reds righty Rhett Lowder, who can at least claim that he’s coming off a pretty decent start his last time out. He fired 5.2 IP of 5 H, ER ball, and finally got his zone command under control (6/2 K/BB) in his second outing back from the shoulder ‘clicking’ issue that sent him to the shelf for a month. Hopefully for the Reds, he can keep the ball on the fringes of the zone and continue to avoid the walk problems he’s dealt with more often than not this season.
First pitch in the series opener is set for 7:05 PM ET.
