The Cincinnati Reds were defeated by a final score of 5-0 by the New York Yankees on Friday. The Yankees continue to perform at a high level while the Reds have been struggling. Cincinnati's lineup had no answer for Yankees' starting pitcher Cam Schlittler in the contest on Friday.
The Reds recorded only four hits in the game while scoring no runs. Blake Dunn led the way with two hits, while Nathaniel Lowe and Eugenio Suarez both added a hit. Aside from that limited offensive production, Cincinnati was unable to get much going.
Schlittler turned in six innings of shutout baseball while striking out 13 and allowing four hits. Schlittler now has a 1.71 ERA, as he continues to establish himself as a legitimate American League Cy Young candidate.
For the Yankees, the ball club had five runs on eight hits. Ben Rice, Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe all had two hits in the contest.
Rhett Lowder got the start for Cincinnati. He had an up and down performance, allowing four earned runs across 5.1 innings of work. Lowder added five strikeouts but he did surrender three walks and six hits.
Lowder now has a 4.82 ERA across 11 total starts so far this season. He has 42 strikeouts in his 52.1 innings of work. Lowder features a high ceiling, but he is still trying to find overall consistency. His future remains bright despite his underperformance.
Cincinnati is now 35-39 overall this season. The Reds started the season strong, but they have been trending in the wrong direction in recent weeks. Cincinnati is hoping to figure things out sooner rather than later. They are 10.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League Central standings.
The Reds would love to make a postseason run. The ball club could realistically compete, but they must find a way to begin winning sooner rather than later. At the moment, they are too inconsistent to make serious noise in the standings.
The offense has been especially inconsistent. It will be interesting to see if they can find ways to score some runs against the Yankees this weekend.
The Reds and Yankees will continue their series in New York on Saturday night. First pitch for the ball game is scheduled for 1:35 PM EST on Saturday afternoon in what should be a good contest between the teams.
