The Cincinnati Reds took a hit in their bid for a return to the playoffs when ace hurler Hunter Greene underwent elbow surgery earlier this month.
As soon as Greene left training camp, the team named lefty Andrew Abbott as its Opening Day starter. Then began the search for a replacement for Greene who could fill out the starting rotation.
Right-hander Chase Burns, who made his debut in 2025, was an obvious choice. The organization expects big things out of the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Wake Forest.

But on Saturday came news from Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 that Burns’ workload will be limited for the rest of spring training. MLB Trade Rumors shared Goldsmith’s report on its X account.
Goldsmith reported Burns had limited range of motion in his throwing arm the day before Friday’s start against the San Francisco Giants. Burns threw just 24 pitches against the Giants after throwing 68 pitches in his previous spring training outing.
“We’re nipping this in the bud right now,” Reds manager Terry Francona told Goldsmith.
Rhett Lowder, Brandon Williamson and Burns are in competition for the final two spots in the rotation, hoping to join Abbott, Brady Singer and Nick Lodolo. According to Goldsmith, Burns remains in the race for a rotation spot. But it’s likely he will start the season under a pitch limit.
Burns made 13 appearances, including eight starts, for Cincinnati last season. He went 0-3 with a 4.57 ERA, striking out 67 batters in 43 1/3 innings.
The Reds finished 83-79 in 2025, sneaking past the New York Mets for the final National League wild-card spot. Cincinnati was swept by the the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in a wild-card series.
