After three seasons with the Detroit Lions, running back David Montgomery has been traded to the Houston Texans in exchange for guard Juice Scruggs and a fourth-round and seventh-round pick in this year's NFL draft.

At last weeks scouting combine in Indianapolis, Lions general manager Brad Holmes said the organization would like to keep him around in 2026, but Montgomery had to reciprocate that feeling.

Just hours before the trade, Montgomery appeared to deny a report saying that he "wants out" and listing possible returns for the Lions.

Damn, Dmo told you that ? https://t.co/ttg4DY6H99

During his stay in Detroit, Montgomery totaled 562 carries for 2,506 yards and 33 touchdowns. But 2025 brough a career low in carries (158) and yards (716). In a 37-24 win against the Cincinnati Bengals on October 5, he had 18 carries for 65 yards and a touchdown.

At Mt. Healthy, Montgomery helped engineer the most successful four-year stretch in school history. For his career, he rushed for 6,664 yards and 91 touchdowns and threw for 2,283 yards and 25 touchdowns as the Owls went 40-9 from 2012 to 2015, including appearing in the Division II regional final in 2013 and 2014.
