The day before the Cincinnati Bearcats baseball team took the field in Starkville, Mississippi for their eighth NCAA Tournament game, head coach Jordan Bischel, pitcher Nathan Taylor and outfielder Derrick Pitts met the media at Dudy Noble Field.

All three have tournament experience as Taylor and Pitts both played in the Knoxville Regional last year, helping UC to win over the No. 2 seed Wake Forest, before falling to top-seed Tennessee and losing an elimination game to the Demon Deacons from the ACC.

Bischel has skippered the Bearcats to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments for the first time ever, plus he has experience in Starkville from his time at Central Michigan. His 2019 Chippewas beat the Miami Hurricanes before falling to the Bulldogs. They lost the rematch with the Hurricanes but won 47 games that season.

Cincinnati Bearcats coach Jordan Bischel on weekend pitching plans

“Yeah, I’m hoping Nate can go nine, and we’ll go from there. I think we’ve been pretty goodat worrying about the next one. We know Nate will give us a great chance to win tomorrow. Iwould imagine as the weekend plays out, we’ll follow the same rotation we have for a whilenow with Logan Knight and Connor Blue. When you get to this point in the year, it’s allhands-on deck trying to win the one in front of you. That’s where we’re at. I think, without adoubt, Adam Buczkowski will play a big role in this regional for us. He’s been pretty lightsout the last month, but there’s a lot of bullpen arms that have helped us a lot. That’s a bigdifference from last year’s team.”

UC Bearcats No. 1 pitcher Nathan Taylor on Starkville Regional

“Yeah, it just means everything. I don’t think when I came here my freshman year, tworegionals in two years is pretty cool, knowing where we were before this. It’s just a surrealmoment getting to play past the Big 12 Tournament. Getting to play extra baseball isawesome.”

Can UC Bearcats offense get Nathan Taylor enough runs?

“Yeah, I mean it’s awesome. I mean, last year in the regional I think I gave up a prettygood amount of runs, and I mean, my offense had me the whole time. It’s happenedmultiple times this year, even on the defensive side. It’s an awesome thing for a pitcher, getting to be able to spike a slider almost every other pitch and having them block justabout everything.”

UC Bearcats sophomore outfielder Derrick Pitts on 'Bischel Ball'

“Oh man, it’s so much fun. Having guys that can run the ball out of the yard, it’s great tosee for us, not just the fans. But obviously, when you can have those explosive types ofplays on the offensive side, it’s good at any time. Just trusting the next guy andunderstanding the depth of our offense and how good we can be when we just trust eachother is the biggest thing. In our mind, there’s no group that can stop us when we’re allclicking and all playing team-ball together.”
