Christian Yelich has been dropped in the Milwaukee Brewers' batting order for their matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday, Aug. 4.
Yelich’s struggles at the plate have been clear throughout the summer, and despite a game-winning performance against the St. Louis Cardinals in early July, he has been in a prolonged slump.
In his two previous games Yelich went hitless in eight at-bats – an 0-for-4 showing in a 4-3 loss to the Pirates on Aug. 3 and another 0-for-4 day against the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 1.
Yelich has an OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) of .698, the lowest of his career.
Originally, Yelich was set to bat seventh Tuesday, but when Jake Bauers was scratched from the lineup due to abdominal soreness, manager Pat Murphy bumped Yelich up to the fifth spot.
With the original order, it would've been only the fifth time in Yelich’s career that he had batted seventh or lower, and the first time he had done so since he played for the Miami Marlins in 2015.
During pregame availability Tuesday, Murphy clarified it was his decision alone to bump Yelich down in the order, and that he’d had a conversation with Yelich about his performance as of late.
“There’s a moment that happens,” Murphy said. “There's a moment that happens and you say, 'You know what, this is what's best for you.'”
Murphy declined to say when the "moment” came where he made the decision regarding Yelich. He made it clear, however, that he believes Yelich wants what’s best for the team.
“No one cares more about getting it right,” Murphy said.
Yelich’s struggles at the plate are only a part of a Brewers offense that has struggled of late. This was clear Sunday against the Angels, when the Brewers were shut out 3-0 despite Jacob Misiorowski's dominant performance. While Misiorowski allowed only three baserunners over seven innings, the offense fell flat with 11 strikeouts, five singles and five walks.
“There comes a point where you want something to change,” Murphy said. “You want something to spark, you want a different direction.”
