The United States Men’s National Team saw its World Cup journey come to a disappointing end earlier this week with a lopsided loss to Belgium, but the result wasn’t the only story to emerge from the match. During and after the game, U.S. star Christian Pulisic faced criticism from analysts and fans who questioned his toughness and mobility and wondered why he didn’t appear to be playing through the pain. As it turns out, there was a very serious reason.

According to a report from Underdog, citing The Athletic, Pulisic suffered a bone bruise and a microfracture of the tibia/fibula during the match. That’s a significant injury for any athlete, let alone one expected to perform at the highest level on the world’s biggest soccer stage.

The diagnosis immediately changes the conversation surrounding Pulisic’s performance and the criticism he received following the loss. In the heat of competition, it’s easy for fans to assume players should simply “tough it out.”

But injuries of this magnitude aren’t something professional athletes should be expected to play through. In fact, attempting to do so could risk making the injury even worse and potentially lead to a much longer recovery.

Knowing the extent of the damage, it’s remarkable that Pulisic remained on the field for as long as he did. Rather than questioning his toughness, many will likely view his effort in an entirely different light.

Critics May Owe Him an Apology

Pulisic has long been one of the faces of American soccer, and with that status comes increased scrutiny whenever the USMNT falls short of expectations. This time, however, much of the criticism appears to have been misplaced.

Playing through a bone bruise and a microfracture is no small task, and expecting any player to continue performing at full capacity under those circumstances is unrealistic. If anything, Pulisic showed tremendous determination by trying to battle through the injury during one of the biggest matches of his career.

The World Cup may have ended in heartbreaking fashion for the United States, but the latest medical update serves as a reminder that not every performance can be judged without knowing what players are dealing with behind the scenes. For Christian Pulisic, the criticism that followed the loss now looks far less justified than it did just a few days ago.
