San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey isn't that different from 49ers fans when it comes to his reaction to the signing of free agent wide receiver Mike Evans.
McCaffrey in an appearance with Ian Rapoport on NFL Network described his feeling after he heard about the 49ers' addition of Evans early in free agency.
"I was so fired up, man!" McCaffrey said before describing why he's been a long-time Evans admirer. "He's somebody that, if you're a fan of football, you've watched his entire career and it's hard not to like the guy. He's a first ballot Hall of Famer. He's somebody that, in my opinion, has never gotten enough credit, and I think he plays that way. He plays with a chip on his shoulder. He's one of the best go-ball runners in the history of the NFL. He blocks his butt off. He's mean, and he's the perfect fit for our offense. I've just been such a fan of his from afar, and the way he plays football. So now to get to play with him, to pick his brain on a lot of stuff. That's what I'm excited about is to learn from him and see what stuff he can bring to our team that maybe we need. And to have a guy like that who's experienced in the NFL at every level is super exciting. So, we're so fired up to have him."
Evans should have a swift impact on a 49ers receiving corps that badly lacked a go-to, No. 1 target last season. Adding him to the top of the depth chart takes a lot of the pressure off a player like McCaffrey to be the 49ers' go-to target on third downs.
Perhaps most importantly for McCaffrey, Evans gets him and the 49ers closer to Super Bowl contention after falling short in the divisional playoffs last season. If Evans is the player he's been throughout his career, he should take some of the playmaking workload away from McCaffrey while elevating San Francisco's offense.
