Former middleweight title challenger Jared Cannonier faced rising star Christian Leroy Duncan in Saturday's UFC Oklahoma City co-main event.
Cannonier was coming off a decision loss to Michael "Venom" Page in his last outing and ranked No. 10 in the division. Having lost three of his last five fights, Cannonier was fighting for relevancy.
Duncan entered the fight ranked No. 12. Having won his lasts four fights, the Brit looked to extended the streak and climb into contender status.
Cannonier came out throwing. Duncan responded with leg kicks and his jab. Cannonier connected with a counter right hand. He clinched and worked to get the fight to the ground. Duncan remained standing but Cannonier kept the pressure on. They worked for position along the cage. Duncan circled free and pressured Cannonier. Duncan missed with a spinning back elbow and Cannonier tied him up. Duncan took Cannonier down but Cannonier quickly got to his feet. Duncan connected with a hard elbow. Duncan created space and unloaded punches. Cannonier retreated. Cannonier took Duncan down. MMAWeekly scored the round 10-9 for Duncan.
Duncan came out throwing kicks in the second. He pressured Cannonier. A spinning back kick to the body knocked Cannonier down. He quickly bounced to his feet and worked to take Duncan down. Cannonier put in a lot of effort working to get Duncan grounded. Duncan defended the attempt and they separated. They clinched. Duncan landed an elbow and Cannonier answered with a left. They exchanged high hands. Cannonier landed a right. Duncan connected with a spinning elbow. They clinched with two minutes remaining in the round.
Cannonier pressured Duncan once they separated. He clinched and tripped Duncan to the canvas. Duncan reversed the position and delivered short left hands. MMAWeekly scored the round 10-9 for Duncan.
Cannonier took the center of the cage to begin the final frame. Duncan bounced on the outside and delivered kicks. He stepped in the pocket with a combination. Cannonier clinched and took Dunch down.
