With LeBron James and several other rotation players departing in free agency, the Los Angeles Lakers have gotten significantly younger this offseason. Many of their current rotation players are in their mid-20s, and they have a couple of very young prospects who are looking to burst into their rotation this coming season.
The most impressive and promising of those prospects is incoming rookie guard Cameron Carr, who was the No. 24 pick in last month's NBA draft. He played well during the California Classic several days ago, and in the Lakers' first game at the main summer league in Las Vegas on Friday, he posted 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting, two rebounds, two blocks, one assist and one steal in a 96-84 win.
Guard Chris Mañon said this week that Carr is going to "be a problem" for other teams in the league, per Dave McMenamin of ESPN.
At 6-foot-5, Carr has a wingspan of roughly 7-foot-1, which makes his jumper hard to block or even bother, and he displayed a 42.5-inch vertical leap at the NBA scouting combine. As Mañon alluded to, Carr does need to add some strength -- he currently weighs 184 pounds -- but once he does, it will help him on both ends of the floor.
Like most incoming rookies, Carr has room for improvement defensively. But his ability to rotate over and block shots, as well as make plays on the ball to get steals and deflections, is already evident.
He could already be ready to earn meaningful slivers of playing time with the Lakers this fall, especially given their need for reliable 3-and-D players who are athletic.

“I said it in one of my other interviews, he’s just super, super long and I feel like we haven’t really seen his full athletic ability yet,” Mañon said. “Yeah, he’s special for sure. He can definitely shoot over guys and score, like I said before. And I think once his body fills out, gains a little weight, he’ll be a problem for sure.”
